Arch Avary, arrived at Emory, Georgia during the "Great Depression"--economic, not emotional!
His parents' efforts to have him achieve a formal education beyond "reading, writing and 'rithmetic" were mostly futile. Lots of parents and children are disappointed by this, but few admit it!
Rather than follow a family tradition of studying medicine, he elected to follow a different path.
After several career attempts at aerospace art and then medical art, he discovered a slot outside of the corporate straitjacket that fit perfectly . . . as a wildlife sculpture in miniature. Most normal sculpture sits on a shelf, or, if outside, is decorated by the birds . . . but his sculptures can be worn anywhere! (Of course, everyone else but Arch insists on calling his work jewelry!)
Arch, along with his wonderful wife Sarah, has hidden for the past fifteen years or so from the outside world on top of a mountain just outside of Hayesville, North Carolina. While there, he has created over 100 original wildlife designs in various media. Survival instincts (eating regularly) have led to branching out from wildlife and designing the unusual and delightful sporting treasures in his River Sports collection.
Currently, in addition to continuing making items in both collections, Arch is considering offering kits for folks who would like to try their hands at making metal sculptures, but don't have the facilities nor the experience at casting hot liquid metal. Arch possibly would be interested in working with you to cast a pewter copy of your original sculpture and telling you how to finish it. If you may be interested in this, please contact Arch by email for further information.
In mid-2005, Arch made the decision to semi-retire. He will still be happy to make one of his miniature sculptures for you, but he won't be marketing as much. To order from him, contact him directly.
