Manatees
Some people say that Manatees are the original source of the Mermaids story, but I think you'd have to be an awful lonely sailor make that mistake!
Even so, manatees are cute and friendly. I've enjoyed swimming with them and scratching them under their chins, many years ago. I have to think, though, that I'd enjoy scratching a mermaid under her chin much more! -- JD
